Kaikoura

Kaikoura is centrally located on highway one almost mid way between Picton (gateway to the South Island by sea) in the north and Christchurch (gateway to the South Island by air) to the south. Transport options to Kaikoura include car, bus, train and daily flights by small fixed wing aircraft from Wellington (bottom of North Island).

Kaikoura is blessed with some of the most stunning natural attributes seen anywhere in the world. A brief interlude of fertile flat land separates a limestone faced peninsula, extending into the Pacific, from a rugged mountain range that juts sharply to peaks that become crowned with snow in winter.

For most this combination would be more than enough, but below the depths of the ocean waters around Kaikoura is the key to the prolific wildlife that has made Kaikoura one of the world’s most fashionable destinations to visit, the Kaikoura Canyon. Dolphins, whales (viewed by sea or air), seals and seabirds including the mighty albatross abound in these nutritionally rich waters that drop to depths of 1000 metres a mere kilometre or two from shore.

The small intimate village of Kaikoura (population of 4,000) services a growing number of visitors each year and quality accommodation and food outlets are available to satisfy the most discerning guest. Other attractions include, fishing, diving, hiking, four wheel bike tours, horse treks, winery, art trails and much more. For further information on Kaikoura’s activities, accommodation and facilities, visit the Kaikoura Information Centre website at: www.kaikoura.co.nz
